Multicultural HIV/AIDS
and Hepatitis C Service (MHAHS)
The Multicultural HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C Service (MHAHS) works to respond
to HIV/AIDS and hepatitis C among people from culturally and linguistically
diverse backgrounds. MHAHS works with communities and mainstream services
to meet the needs of individuals and communities.
Our Staff
The Service employs bilingual/bicultural workers from more than 20 language
backgrounds called co-workers. These staff are integral to the links established
between the service and culturally diverse communities and to assist with
strategies in community development, health promotion and ethnic media
campaigns, as well as a clinical support program for people affected by
HIV/AIDS.
Clinical Support (NSW only)
The Service provides support to people living with HIV/AIDS, their partners,
families and/or carers in NSW. Individuals and service providers can refer
a client. We do not need a Medicare Card or any other form of identification
and all referrals are treated confidentially.
*For more information on our clinical support service
in NSW, see Support and Understanding
further down. |
Community Development
Community development initiatives recognise that the best approaches to
HIV/AIDS and hepatitis C come from the communities themselves. The MHAHS
often works with different communities or sub-groups to develop culturally
appropriate strategies that respect the cultural values whilst aiming
to reduce the impact of HIV/AIDS and/or hepatitis C.
Education and Media Services
Education and media initiatives are conducted with specific communities,
sub-groups or health / welfare workers. The Service has fostered on-going
links with ethnic media in Australia to raise awareness and understanding
of HIV/AIDS and hepatitis C and regularly implements campaigns to reach
culturally diverse communities.
